The star(s) and the team

My responsibility is getting all my players playing for the name on the front of the jersey, not the one on the back. –Unknown

A team that wants to be successful can not just depend on the star players, and would be in a very dangerous situation if it did.

There’s a lot we can learn from sports teams, and this is one of them.

Even a star player needs someone to pass the ball, the puck – or he/she won’t be able to score. Getting each player to own the results of the whole team is what makes the difference.

Great leaders, great coaches know this – they know how to value ALL the contributions in the team, the unique qualities and strengths that every person brings, rather than just valuing the ability to score. Putting names to those other qualities is sometimes one of the challenges for leaders, as it may not be as obvious or easy to see as a “score”.

Are you valuing all the contributors in your team? Are all the contributors in your team valued? And are there any challenges in doing this? What are your thoughts and experiences? Please comment below. We’d love to hear.
