The authentic leader
There’s not just one way to be a leader.
Each leader has their own unique way to be a good or even an excellent leader. In fact, the more you can tap into your own unique strengths and capabilities, the more authentic and effective you can be. Your authentic leadership is how you use the leadership competencies known to be effective and valuable in relationship to others.
The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things, it is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things
Ronald Reagan
When we’ve talked to some great leaders around the world, here are some of the leadership competencies they see as “timeless” and worth considering. And we agree:
- Communication, including feedback
- Individual development (self and others)
- Flexibility – in thought and action
- Empathy, care (part of EQ)
- Emotional intelligence (EQ)
- Integrity
- Courage
- Intuition
So keep these in mind and then find your own, authentic leadership.
Don’t try to copy someone else. Be honest to yourself and find your unique way of leading (it’s all about the HOW of competencies) to maximise your own leadership and effectiveness.
Besides, it’s more fun to lead when you find your best way of doing it.
